This workflow uses Perplexity for a quarterly competitive landscape brief — a common PM and strategy task where citations matter.

Build a cited competitor snapshot

1. Frame the question narrowly. Ask: "What did [Competitor A], [B], and [C] announce in the last 90 days regarding pricing, enterprise features, and API changes?" Enable Pro search if your plan includes deeper retrieval.
2. Upload context. Attach your internal positioning doc or prior brief so Perplexity can contrast public claims against your baseline.
3. Demand structure. Follow up: "Reformat as a table: company, change, date, source URL, implication for us." Perplexity handles structured output well when you specify columns.
4. Spot-check citations. Open the top three sources for any claim that would reach executives or customers. Replace or footnote anything from secondary aggregators.
5. Save to a Collection. Store the thread in a Collection named for the quarter so you can extend it next cycle without re-explaining context.
6. Export and annotate. Paste the brief into Notion or Slides; keep Perplexity links as footnotes for auditability.

Perplexity saves the most time when your prompt names competitors, time windows, and output shape upfront — vague "tell me about the market" queries produce vague answers even with citations.

Perplexity offers a free tier with a limited number of Pro searches and standard queries per day — enough to evaluate the citation UX but not to run daily intel for a team. Perplexity Pro (typically around $20/month or equivalent annual pricing) expands Pro search usage, unlocks better models for synthesis, file upload limits, and priority access during high load.

Enterprise and team plans add admin controls, SSO, and contract billing for organizations that want centralized seats. API access is priced separately on a usage model: you pay per request or token tier depending on the endpoint, and API quotas do not automatically mirror consumer Pro subscriptions.

Plan names, search limits, and model routing change frequently. Before budgeting a research workflow or product integration, confirm current allowances, data retention policies, and regional availability on Perplexity's official pricing page.

ChatGPT with browsing is the obvious overlap, but Perplexity's default experience is tighter for research: citations are first-class, not bolted on. Choose ChatGPT when you need Custom GPTs, Canvas, voice, or a broader plugin ecosystem in one subscription.

Gemini appeals if you already live in Google Workspace and want Deep Research-style flows tied to Drive and Gmail. Gemini can win on personal data grounding; Perplexity wins on a dedicated, citation-native research UI.

Claude suits long document analysis and careful drafting where you upload PDFs and iterate in Artifacts. Many teams use Perplexity to gather and cite external facts, then Claude to rewrite findings for internal or customer-facing prose.
